Paolo Levi

Eugenio Mombelli is a contemplative artist involved in visual lyrical abstract research, a descendent of the European informal tradition in the past-war period when the tendency was absolute destruction of “recognisable” shapes. The shapes and colours he brings to the surface reveal the intermittent pathos of his soul in search of the invisible - visions that probe to the depths of his unconscious, archetypes that desire to be reconstructed in their entirety.

This Utopia makes Eugenio Mombelli a poet, an all-absorbing artist who transfigures his oneiric world in enigmatic visions.

He conveys his message through a limited range of colours. He uses various shades of blue, white and grey to reflect pictorial writing in artificial style, with hues at times on a uniform background, dilated in a nocturnal key, or grey or solar white.

Eugenio Mombelli never gives his paintings a title. Rather he attributes them a number, as did Mozart’s archivist.

For him, the visionary creator of oil paintings, enamels, sand work and collages, art is a matter of consciousness.

Study after study he continues to depart from the “recognisable”, to embrace – or rather identify – another more complex dimension.

Eugenio Mombelli is fully aware that his pictorial automatism is controlled mainly by his psychic automatism. For this informal art, the only true reality is the material. Yet this does not prevent him from creating images that must always remain within the bounds of the canvas in a musical modulation of forms.
